Two Upcoming Fun Events

Friends of South Pasadena Nature Park is excited to be collaborating with local nonprofits and city staff to offer fun and educational programs promoting environmentally responsible practices. We invite you to join us for South Pas Active Ride & Picnic (registration required) on March 16th, and the Sustainability Fair, Plant Swap and Garden Tour on April 6th.

Volunteer Day and South Pas Active Ride & Picnic

March 16th will be a busy day at the Nature Park! It is a regular monthly Volunteer Day, and we are hosting a large group of cyclists who will be riding from Garfield Park to the Nature Park and back. So how is this going to work?

Friends of South Pas Nature Park volunteers will be encouraged to show the cyclists around the park. Areas of special interest include the butterfly garden, the labyrinth, educational signage throughout the park, and the new story path. Kids who are interested can go on a scavenger hunt in search of plants, animals, and fungi in the park. In addition, volunteers and other visitors can help prepare cuttings for propagation. Cuttings that successfully root will be planted in the park.

However, those who feel more comfortable pulling weeds and spreading mulch are welcome to do that. It will be a busy and probably somewhat chaotic day, but hopefully everyone will learn something and have fun doing it!

South Pas Parks Ride & Picnic
Kids and kids-at-heart will want to join South Pas Active on a bike ride from Garfield Park to the Nature Park and back. Friends of South Pasadena Nature Park will be available to show the cyclists around the park. We plan to help participants propagate cuttings for use in the Nature Park. A picnic will follow after the group returns to Garfield Park. Registration is required.

Sustainability Fair Announcement

The City of South Pasadena, South Pasadena Beautiful, and Friends of South Pas Nature Park are collaborating on a Sustainability Fair, Plant Swap and Garden Tour in the Nature Park.

Sustainability Fair

  • Meet the sustainability team of the City of South Pasadena to discuss crucial programs aimed at enhancing our city’s environmental initiatives.
  • Attend a Los Angeles County Smart Gardening workshop focused on composting and adopting sustainable gardening practices.
  • Connect with members of various environmental organizations to gain insights on how you can adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Plant Swap

Once again, South Pasadena Beautiful will host its popular annual plant swap. The public is encouraged to participate by bringing a plant to exchange. Please bring your plant in a pot and label it. People always ask what the plant is and sometimes, we don’t know! Also, please do not bring an armload of cuttings. We want all plants to get taken and not end up in a compost bin.

Garden Tour

  • Embark on a leisurely stroll through the park accompanied by knowledgeable volunteers during this year’s Garden Tour.
  • Experience South Pasadena’s own superbloom. This winter, volunteers scattered more wildflower seeds than ever before, and we eagerly anticipate the colorful results.
  • Join a group of Plein Air artists to discover the joy of connecting with nature and experiencing its healing properties through the art of painting.

The day will be full of fun activities, all intended to help us as a community learn how to live lightly on the land. As such, South Pas Active will be again this year hosting a free Bike Valet!  Come see our City’s native plants while also enjoying its river front bike path.

March Volunteer Day

Where: 100 block of Pasadena Avenue in So Pas, east of York Blvd. Bridge
When: 3/16/2024;  9 am – noon
What: On this special day volunteers can either help out with the Bike Ride & Picnic (see above), or work in the park as usual

Nature Park volunteers should:

  • Wear sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • Bring plenty of water
  • Bring gardening gloves and tools (weeders, trowels, whatever you use in your own garden), there are extra tools and gloves for those who need them
  • Wear comfortable work clothes, including work shoes (sneakers or boots) and long pants
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching (optional)
(It is recommended that participants wear face masks. I use one in my own garden to help with allergens and dust.)

Children must be under adult supervision at all times. There is poison oak in the park that we will point out before starting.

The South Pas Nature Park is a four-acre habitat park along the Arroyo Seco. The entrance, marked by a small plaque on an attractive river rock wall, is in the 100 block of Pasadena Avenue in South Pasadena, east of the York Street Bridge. There is plenty of on-street parking on Pasadena Avenue.

Upcoming Cleanups and Events

Volunteer days are usually held on the third Saturday of the month from 9 am to noon. We have quite a few new events in addition to the regular cleanups.

(Dates are tentative, please confirm on Facebook,, or email.)

If you would like to help grow our nature park but prefer not to get into the dirt, you can donate through South Pasadena Beautiful. Be sure to include a note specifying that the donation be applied to the Nature Park.
