It must be fall

The days are getting shorter and cooler. The toyon berries are blushing and the fuchsia-flowering gooseberry’s buds are swelling! I miss the east coast fall but revel in our own.

Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) berries are beginning to blush.

Fuchsia-flowering gooseberry (Ribes speciosum) went dormant and is now loaded with leaf buds.

  1. It's nice to think of toyon plants blushing…

I'm a sunshine person and am lamenting the colder, shorter days that have suddenly asserted themselves. But the red toyon berries and the leafed out gooseberry will make up for some of the darkness.

  3. Isn't it amazing how each climate has their own signs of fall? I see some here in Phoenix too!

I think your berry cluster is lovely and the leaf buds offer hope of a spring just a few short months away.

Barbara,<br />Thanks so much for the photos. They are amazing in their detail. It is exciting to prepare for fall planting as the days cool and shorten.

  6. Thanks to all for your comments. I find a break from the heat to be very, very welcome. And of course, the beginning of the planting season in another month or so is exciting as well. But most important is the coming rains. Unfortunately with all of the fires this summer, they will be accompanied by anxiousness for our friends, family and neighbors who live near the burn areas.

Enjoyed your signs of fall for our area. The photos of the berries are particularly nice.
