I promised in my last post to turn my attention away from the past, to the beautiful surroundings I now find myself in. All of the irrigation work that I described in the last two posts (Part 1, Part 2) was done in preparation for a two month absence from my garden in Southern California. A month has passed since leaving the scorching weather of So Cal and the garden (with help) is holding its own. So now to the Pacific Northwest – the unLA – with its cool days, interesting clouds, breathtaking rainbows, and lots of greenery.
Five beautiful gardens
Last weekend the Orcas Island Garden Club held its annual garden tour featuring five distinctive gardens. Gardens A and D were lovely residential gardens that gave me lots of ideas of things I could do if I were so inclined to start gardening here (only time will tell!). Garden C was a community vegetable garden that “feeds 25 islanders, providing them with vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers.” Teachers, students and volunteers from the local K-6 school proudly showed off their amazing and educational school garden (E). The tour was capped off with a visit to a nine-acre “estate of both architectural and horticultural significance.”
Seeing the gardens was fun and educational, but it was the generosity and graciousness of the hosts that I cherished most. Thank you goes to the Orcas Island Garden Club and all of the garden hosts!
