Things are looking bad for Arcadia Woodlands

The following email was sent out this morning. Apparently the LA County Department of Public Works is going ahead with destruction of the Arcadia Woodlands – chain saws scheduled to start on Wednesday.

Heads up… see the forwarded message below.

Quick background: As part of the 30-day moratorium, the L.A. County Department of Public Works was asked to complete a report on possible alternatives to the current “preferred alternative” (and to report on further community input). Unsurprisingly, it looks like they are holding their ground.

I just spoke to Cam Stone. He said he spoke to Matt Burch (editor of the Arcadia Patch) who apparently spoke with a DPW spokesperson last night. To summarize, they are saying the project is moving forward and that they made no errors during the EIR process (despite the incredible lack of communication). Chainsaws are scheduled for next Wednesday! Janette Williams (Star News) and Louis Sahagun (L.A. Times) apparently received the same message. I am trying to get my hands on a copy of the report (it was supposed to be made available online, not yet though).

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors should review this. It is not yet on their agenda for the 11th (this Tuesday), see attached. It is critical that as many voices as possible know about and speak out on this. Please feel free to pass this along.

If you would like to be added to the email list below, please let me know. Keep in mind that you’ll receive A LOT of email if so, but it is the front line right now.

Subject: ALERT! PROJECT RESUMES AND CHAINSAWS ARRIVE THIS COMING WEDNESDAY!

All:
I am sorry to report that the DPW’s report to the Board of Supervisors states that they have done everything correctly and plan to resume the project and destroy the Arcadia Woodlands starting this coming Wednesday, January 12.
The report to my knowledge is still not available on-line. If someone finds it, please send everyone the link to it.
I am in shock.

  1. Oh how depressing. I can't believe how incredibly short-sighted we can be as a species sometimes.

The problem with DWP isn't really whether they did everything 'correctly' or not. That's just legal wrangling.

The problem is that they aren't doing the right thing and, more importantly, they are not heeding the will of the people – you know, their customers – the people who pay their salaries. I haven't seen a comment from a single resident who is in favor of

So is there any movement under way to show up at tomorrow's LA County Board of Supervisors meeting?
