Gardening Throughout the Year in So Cal (September)

I am starting this blog to post notes on gardening activities throughout the year in my partially native plant garden here in Southern California.

Fall is the big planting season for those of us lucky enough to enjoy a mild mediterranean climate. Today, I removed two buggy broccoli plants, pushed the lawn back a bit further in the back yard, cut back some native grasses and turned over part of the compost heap.

While doing this, I had an eye out for new planting opportunities. I am hoping to add a large ceanothus (Cal-Poly was gorgeous last year, so I’ll probably do this one), lots of California fuchsias, some grasses and buckwheat.
